QUALIFICATIONS

POSITION - Bibliographer and Outreach Librarian for Romance Languages and Literatures and Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies.

RESPONSIBILITIES - The University at Albany Libraries is seeking an energetic, knowledgeable, creative librarian to serve as the bibliographer for the University’s language and literature programs in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, as well as its Latin American, Caribbean and U. S. Latino Studies program. Evaluates and develops collections (all material formats), manages subject acquisitions budgets, provides bibliographic instruction and research consultation for faculty and students in assigned subject areas, and develops, authors, and maintains subject Web sites. When necessary, assists the Libraries’ technical services units with the acquisitions and cataloging of materials related to these subject areas.  Provides general reference services during assigned hours, including some evenings and weekends. Represents the library at national and international conferences, consortia, projects and meetings. Reports to Assistant Director for Collections.  Research, publication and service to the Libraries, University and profession are expected to satisfy criteria for continuing appointment and promotion.  All finalists will be asked to submit official transcripts and to present on a specific topic to all library personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS - Required: Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited institution and accredited by a U. S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.  At least 5 years of collection development experience, including managing budgets and evaluating and monitoring approval plans, for Romance languages and literatures and/or Latin American and Caribbean Studies in an academic/research library setting. Fluency in Spanish and French. Reading knowledge of Italian and Portuguese. Knowledge of publishing, book trade, history, culture and society in geographic areas pertaining to subject responsibilities. Demonstrated working knowledge of electronic resources and reference tools specialized in the assigned subject areas. At least 3 years of experience providing both specialized and general reference assistance in an academic/research setting. Familiarity with trends in academic and research libraries. Evidence of professional engagement.  Experience with library and office computer applications and experience authoring and managing Web pages. Evidence of ability to plan and conduct outreach activities and interact collaboratively with teaching faculty and library faculty and staff. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong commitment to public service, outreach and information literacy.  Applicants must address in their applications their abilities to work with a culturally diverse population.  Preferred:  Graduate degree or course work in one or more disciplines related to this position. Experience working with foreign language materials vendors. Experience with special collections materials, developing collections of audiovisual materials in subjects relevant to this position, and managing and monitoring gift programs.
