Brief description of duties:

Reporting to the VP for University Development, the AVP is responsible for the University’s comprehensive major gifts program.  Direct reports include fourteen gift officers assigned either to units throughout the University or to university-wide priorities.  The AVP works with staff to develop effective cultivation and solicitation strategies for major, principal, planned gift, and corporate and foundation prospects (defined as prospects capable of contributing $25,000 or more in support of University priorities) and oversees their timely execution.  The AVP will foster collaborative working relationships with colleagues in University Development, as well as senior administrators, deans, and faculty.  The AVP works closely with the VP on all aspects of fundraising and is responsible for securing major gifts.  The AVP will manage a personal caseload and originate 10 to 12 face-to-face meetings per month.  Frequent travel and evening/weekend work required.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and seven or more years in development experience in major or planned gifts are required.  Advanced degree and professional experience in an academic environment are preferred.  The degree(s) must be from a college or university accredited by the US DOE or internationally recognized accrediting organization.  Proven ability to qualify, cultivate, and solicit high level prospects, and steward donors.  Working knowledge of planned gift vehicles and familiarity with financial and estate planning concepts.  Ability to supervise staff and build a collaborative work environment.  Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.  Demonstrated experience working with culturally diverse groups of people.
