Brief description of duties:

The Office of International Education intends to appoint one or two Study Abroad Advisors with primary responsibility for East Asia.  Applicants should be proficient in Mandarin Chinese or in Japanese.  If two appointments are made, one appointee will be proficient in Mandarin Chinese and the other in Japanese.  If only one appointment is made, the appointee may be proficient in either Mandarin Chinese or in Japanese.

Brief Description of Duties:

Study Abroad position is a full-time 12-month position with full benefits.  Duties include advising students on study abroad opportunities in Japan, China and other countries in East Asia as well as other parts of the world as needed, assisting in the development and administration of study abroad programs with an emphasis on East Asia, providing academic advisement to exchange students from East Asia and elsewhere, preparation of publications and publicity materials, speaking at student meetings and classes, participating in University at Albany functions including occasionally assisting with Chinese or Japanese speaking visitors to the University, serving as a translator in meetings with Chinese or Japanese delegations, attending off-campus study abroad fairs, assisting in the planning and organizing of study abroad orientation and re-entry programs, reviewing study abroad applications, communicating with partner universities, and managing correspondence with students and parents relative to programs in East Asia.

Qualifications:

The position(s) require(s) a Bachelor’s degree, with a Masters degree highly preferred. Candidates with only a Bachelor’s degree will be expected to have more experience and foreign language ability. Degree (s) must be from a college or university accredited by a US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.  Experience living in China, Taiwan or Japan is required. Familiarity with educational systems in China, Taiwan or Japan is required. Advanced proficiency in Mandarin Chinese or Japanese is required, including ability to engage in oral and written dialogue with overseas partners. Knowledge of Korean and/or experience in Korea is a plus. Experience managing study abroad programs is a plus. Demonstrated experience working with culturally diverse groups of people is required. Demonstrated interest in and commitment to the field of International Education and in working with students is also required. At least one year’s experience working with students in a college or university is required. Candidates should be outgoing with strong interpersonal, public speaking, and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to write in English and contribute to written public relations efforts is required. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience as a team player and will also be able to work independently. Ability to occasionally travel outside of the United States for periods of a few weeks is required.
